Abstract
Web-based technology assisted teaching project was initiated at our institution to overcome difficulties experienced due to distance and different time-zones at four campuses in three continents. It is demonstrated that the pilot project initiated to improve teaching methods has benefited from the experience gained in this pilot project at these campuses. Many of the advantages for the lecturing staff, administrators and the participating students have been highlighted. Web based course management tools (CMT) were employed to effectively manage, coordinate, monitor progress, provide feedback to students, and to link students and staff in four different campuses dedicated to active learning producing the best possible outcomes without sacrificing standards. The teaching and resources web page dedicated for this program is well designed, user-friendly and forms the backbone of the virtual learning environment (VLE) linking all campuses making it accessible at all times, on-campus and off-campus. Conscious efforts were made to make the presentation of lectures and study materials an enjoyable experience for our first year IT students. Student satisfaction was measured using a feedback system and the overall performance improvements measured. Feedback from the web system was used to rectify any shortcomings and improve our teaching methods. Significant improvements in student response and performance highlighted.
