Abstract
Experimental data is presented in order to demonstrate that a metamaterial flat sheet of split ring resonators (SRRs) with the gaps oriented randomly in the plane of the dielectric sheet can effectively ´cloak´ or shield a metal sheet placed behind the metamaterial and can also shield metal disks (either circular or square in shape) of various diameters placed in front of the metamaterial sheet. Unlike previous numerical and experimental studies, here the SRRs are all parallel to the E and H fields of the normally incident constant phase front Gaussian beam. For disks placed in front of the metamaterial sheet, shielding is effective as long as the dimensions of the disk are equal to or less than the diameter of the Gaussian beam and shielding occurs at the plasmon resonance frequency of the SRR (10.45 GHz for this sample).
