Abstract
Due to the intrinsic advantages of convenience and large coverage range, wireless communications has made significant progress in both commercial and military sectors. In order to enhance mobility, the size of wireless apparatuses are constrained, resulting in limitation on the size of circuit components in the apparatus. The miniaturization of circuit components, such as antennas and filters, etc., becomes a key research field in the area of wireless communications. In this paper, the optimization techniques are examined and evaluated. Limitations of the existing optimization techniques are identified. A new approach is proposed to overcome these limitations, so as to achieve a meander EBG structure that demonstrates both a small ripple level and a wide stopband with high attenuation. The new approach was applied in the design of a lowpass filter which shows both high performances and compact physical size simultaneously.
