  • Abstract
A technically meaningful demonstration of motor adequacy requires a comprehensive test program controlled by procedures under a quality assurance program, and a definition of critical characteristics as it relates to functional performance. This paper discusses how to determine motor critical characteristics, evaluates industry guidance and standards for motor testing, and defines the types of tests which are appropriate for demonstration of motor adequacy. Included are examples of means to assure ability to accelerate expected load under worst case anticipated load and power system conditions. Determination of margin between rating limits and actual load conditions (e.g. operating temperatures versus rated temperatures), verification of quality achievement (e.g. balanced windings), freedom from incipient failures (e.g. turn to turn shorts), and other vital tests to reasonably validate motor health
