Abstract
The design of an adaptive sensitivity CCD image sensor is described. The sensitivity of each pixel is individually controlled (by changing its exposure time) to assure that it is operating in the linear range of the CCD response, and not in the cut-off or saturation regions. Thus, even though an individual CCD sensor is limited in its dynamic range, the whole CCD array has a much wider dynamic range. The idea is based on the biological retina principle of operation, enabling the imager to capture details in both the light and dark areas of high-contrast scenes, as in the human eye.
