Abstract
Based on studies of the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP), a performance index reflecting cardiac oxygen balance was formulated and implemented in an optimal control system. This control system changes the deflation time of the IABP with respect to the R-wave to maximize the performance index. Features of the algorithm include the ability to adapt to rapid changes in heart rate, to track a changing optimal point, and to allow the operator to vary the weights assigned to the performance index variables
