  • Abstract
This paper presents a pulsed ultra-wideband communication (UWB) system suitable for sensor network applications. The low complexity, low power architecture allows data communications as well as geolocation of the transmitting node. The system is based on a frequency hopping OOK modulation at the transmitting side combined with a non-coherent detector at the receiver. To validate the concept two RF integrated circuits (an emitter and a receiver) were designed. They operate in the 3.3 to 5.1 GHz frequency band. The generated by the transmitter output signal is compatible with the current FCC regulation. The integrated circuits were manufactured in a 0.35 mum BiCMOS process. The system can achieve a maximum of 10 Mpulses/s communication rate
