Abstract
We show that the most performing dispersion compensation technique for single mode fibre (SMF) transmissions at 10 Gbit/s is post-compensation, and we give a design rule for WDM self-phase modulation-limited transmissions. We generalise the results by analysing the dependence of the performances of both schemes on the residual dispersion. The study is concentrated on realistic terrestrial transmission links, which typically reach 500 km
