Abstract
This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of a 500 m/s linear induction launcher (LIL). This name was derived from its principle of operation which is similar to that of the classical induction motor. Various theoretical models and computer simulation codes were developed, and have been validated experimentally in laboratory prototypes. The ´results were published previously. The 500 m/s LIL system was built to provide scaling-up guidelines for the engineering of a higher- energy system. At print time, muzzle velocities up to 250 m/s have been achieved for a 134 gram projectile. The paper provides details of the coil construction, the barrel structure, the catcher construction, the drive circuit design, and the optical-isolator circuit. Also, a comparison of test results with computer predictions is presented.
