Abstract
An approach to troubleshooting communication networks is described. Techniques for improving network performance are also discussed. An overview of the parts and pieces required to build the network is given. The author divides communications networks into four parts: (1) physical cable and path through the plant, (2) network interface modules and communication modems, (3) programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and computers, and (4) communication software and firmware. Ideas on how to debug each part are provided.<>
