Abstract
An overview of the steps taken by the Spanish government to incorporate microelectronics technology progressively into Spain´s industrial products is given. The creation of a national center for microelectronics as well as the strategy adopted to increase the skills of Spanish scientists and engineers in designing full or semicustom integrated circuits are presented. Particular attention is given to two main initiatives: (1) the multiproject ASIC, intended to provide basic training to industries; and (2) the workshop for microelectronics design at universities, intended to provide advanced training to future lecturers and researchers in the microelectronics field
