  • Abstract
The porosity of nonwoven separator materials can decrease when subjected to pressure during assembly into a battery, thus affecting performance. A compression porometer that can simulate the compaction experienced in actual practice by separator mats is described. Present and future capabilities are given and measurements of pore-related parameters versus compression are presented. The engineering option of pre-deformation of the separator is considered
