Abstract
The Royal Naval Engineering College at Manadon, Plymouth, is primarily responsible for degree education of young engineering officers within the Royal Navy. Weapon Engineers and Air Engineers read the Electrical Engineering Systems and Aeronautical Systems BEng degrees respectively. These degrees are issued under the auspices of the University of Plymouth and are accredited by the IEE and RAeS. The importance of a firm and thorough understanding of the principles and processes of signal processing upon which to build later engineering subjects, is clearly recognised. Consequently it is lectured with a strong engineering bias early in the second year and as a separate subject, by the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department. The relevance of signal processing to radar, sonar, communications and control systems is consistently emphasised by liberal referencing to systems applications. Since the course precedes final year subjects such as detection systems, a strong emphasis is put on the concepts which underlie the processing of signals in the presence of background noise
