  • Abstract
    It is well known how to build arrays. Phased arrays have not been cost-effective for most applications. An important consideration is how phase array become affordable. Extensive system trade studies are critical to ensuring the "best investment strategy" for the transition from platforms with multiple RF systems of single antennas supporting single functions to multi-function, multi-frequency shared apertures. These trade studies must consider system performance requirements, signature requirements, topside integration issues, and cost. However, it appears that phase arrays are fundamental to this strategy. In order to ensure the implementation of this important technology, the investment in multi-function phase array technology needs to focus on affordability. A strong case can be made for investing in multiple, wideband arrays technology with limited investment in extremely wideband arrays for special applications.
