Abstract
The building blocks of a portable radio are batteries, which can be replaceable primary cells or rechargeable secondaries. If rechargeable batteries are used the effect of the charging current and battery monitoring have to be considered in the design. In particular the terminal voltage of nickel cells can rise to 2 V per cell when they are fast charged. The “radio” will need a range of different supplies provided by the PSU block. The common power supply configuration for cellular handsets is outlined. Seven MAXIM power supplies are then outlined for different portable radios
