    We present the recent trends in the development of design and simulation tools for integrated optical circuits. We will address the relevant design steps, required to finish a typical design cycle, such as technology simulations, optical simulations, and mask layout, as well as the vertical integration of these steps. A specific example is given with respect to the design process for a thermo-optical switch
