Abstract
The tunable properties of one dimensional photonic crystal laser with a liquid crystal defect are investigated numerically by the Transfer Matrix Method. To tune the effective refractive index of the liquid crystal defect, we introduce an external electric field whose direction can be manipulated. The wavelength range of the defect mode is from 382.9nm to 388.1nm in this kind of photonic crystal laser. The defect mode whose wavelength is longer has a larger quality factor. The localized phenomenon can be found in the light distributions of the defect modes, and most of the light wave energy is confined in the neighboring layers of the defect layer. The relative light intensity gets stronger firstly and turns weaker as the gain coefficient increase. The threshold of pump power gets smaller with the increase of the defect mode wavelength.
