Abstract
The Beam Propagation Method (BPM) spans a period of approximately twenty years and it is recognised as the most versatile tool for analysing, complex optical guided wave devices. Early publications were based completely upon scalar formulations. The method gradually moved from scalar formulations to vector formulations through a semi-vector stage, in order to accurately simulate the polarised effects associated with light propagation within optical systems.
