  • Abstract
With heart diseases, and associated complications, being one of the major causes of death around the world, and in spite of decreased mortality rate, detection of irregularities in the rhythms of the heart is a growing field in medical research. Extended patient monitoring during normal activity has become increasingly important as a standard preventive cardiological procedure for detection of cardiac conditions. The research reported in this paper focuses on the development of a portable platform for real-time analysis of EKG signals, which can be used as an advanced warning device for heart abnormalities. The embedded software component for this device is the focus of this paper. In this, the emphasis is on algorithms and techniques for buffering and analyzing the digitized signals. Of particular interest are methods for detecting sections of the EKG waveform: the P-wave and QRS-complex, for preliminary diagnosis of Tachycardia type of heart disease of home-cared patients
