Effectiveness of a Theory-Based HIV-Related Sexual Risk-Reduction Prevention for Female Rural-to-Urban Migrants in Beijing, China : A Pilot Study

This study evaluates the efficacy of protection motivation theory-based HIV prevention program in increasing HIV knowledge, condom-use perception, condom-use intention and consistent condom use among female rural-to-urban migrants in Beijing, China. Three hundred female migrants were assigned to the intervention group (N = 200) and control group (N = 100). Data were collected at baseline and immediate postintervention. The results suggest female migrants in the intervention group were significantly higher than the control group in HIV-related knowledge, condom-use perception, condom- use intention and condom-use skill. Moreover, higher rates of consistent condom use at postintervention were found compared to that at baseline in the intervention group(32% vs. 17%, P< 0.05). In sum, the theory-based intervention trial can be efficacious in increasing HIV knowledge, condom use perception and consistent condom use among female rural-to-urban migrants in China.
