Abstract
It has been established now that the non ionised radiations Viz LF, HF, VHF and microwave have adverse biological effect on the human health in addition to the heating effect on tissues. These could be development of microwave syndromes, cancer, brain cell damage, loss of memory, loss/damage of sperm cells in the males, deformation of child in the womb, damage to the immune system, damage to retinal cells etc etc. In later 20th century when use of electromagnetic spectrum increased for Telecommunications, Broadcasting and household remote-controlling, enormous health effects started taking place by non-ionizing radiations. The density of towers per square Km has gone to 8 to 9 in the metro cities resulting in a very heavy density of Electromagnetic Field. RF radiation pollution is one of these. In the last decade a growing scientific evidence has shown that our homes and workspaces can be more seriously polluted than urban outdoor areas. This pollution presents a serious health challenge. The adverse health effects of these non-ionized radiations and particularly radiations from GSM / CDMA towers, FM towers and TV towers are becoming known more and more. To have a check on these various governments have laid down various guidelines for the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) levels. A distinct need is therefore felt that the non ionizing electromagnetic radiations be considered as a potent polluting agent and, therefore, be dealt by the ministry dealing with pollution control in a way they are dealing with air, water, and noise pollutions. Seeing the adverse biological effects of this pollution, the world organizations like ICNIRP had taken up formulation of these guidelines. These guidelines need drastic and serious considerations for changing the limits as more and more studies are proving adverse biological effects even at low radiation levels. Unfortunately India does not have such guidelines. A deliberate effort has been made here to talk about the ne- - ed, revision and formulation of guideline policies in India to control such pollutions.
