Abstract
We developed a strength training device `ERIK´ having a controllable passive element by apply an electrorheological (ER) fluid. ERIK has a uniform-load mode and a uniform-velocity mode. In the uniform-load mode, ERIK provides a constant load generated by an ER fluid brake and can thus be used in isotonic exercise. In the uniform-velocity mode, ERIK provides a load moving at constant velocity through control of the ER brake and can thus be used in isokinetic exercise. In addition, the passive element of ERIK can switch between acting as a brake or clutch. In this paper, we compare the control performance of ERIK operated in brake and clutch modes in experiments.
