Abstract
A new instrumentation concept called mechanical automatic test technology (MATT) is introduced which can be used to monitor and analyze the elements of motion within machines. Using conventional motion-sensor inputs, the instrument collects motion data from all moving elements of the system. This data, when analyzed by software/firmware tailored to the specific application, can be used to evaluate system performance. If a failure exists, it can be detected and isolated. If the instrumentation is designed into the mechanical system or machine, the software can be designed to recommend preventative maintenance before a failure occurs
