  • Abstract
    Thermal energy storage (TES) can be used to shift air-conditioning (A/C) load and thus reduce peak electricity demand. A case study is presented for Saudi Arabia, within which a high penetration of small-scale residential A/C systems is prevalent. A model that estimates A/C usage for the selected network is developed. Historical demand data is used to forecast the holistic impact of extensive TES use on electricity consumption. An assessment is made of how the spread of small-scale TES may help assuage the extent by which in-Kingdom generating capacity is projected to expand over coming years.
