Abstract
This paper investigates applications of Petri nets in traffic signal control. We develop Petri nets models for typical traffic signal control strategies. Subnets are developed for both the traffic control logic as well as the traffic flow. Performance evaluation results are derived through using a Petri net-based simulation language, simulation nets (SimNet), the results of these studies are compared with analytical approaches and HCM (Highway capacity manual) results
