Abstract
The application of batteries in a transmission system can help alleviate thermal overload and increase the transmission capability of critical corridors. The purpose of the paper is to propose an approach for determining the capacity of a battery providing support during N-1 contingencies to relieve transmission line thermal overload, with the probability, severity and potential consequences of the contingencies taken into account. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to take into account the relative importance of the different characteristics of the contingencies when determining their relative significance in battery capacity determination. The approach was tested on the IEEE Reliability Test System.
