  • Abstract
    This paper presents an integrated economic dispatch model of electric power generation and spinning reserve. This model considers the costs of spinning reserves, its geographic location and response capacity of the generation units. The spinning reserves are important to assure an adequate level of system operational security, mainly related to contingencies or abnormal load demand. Usually, the spinning reserves are allocated taking into account only economic aspect. But, others aspects must be considered, such as their geographic localization and the response capacity of generation unit. The allocation of spinning reserves far from load centers results in more transmission losses when the reserves are used. Some generation units respond in less time than others and this aspect are important in the system operation. The methodology was implemented in MATLAB and applied on the IEEE30 test system. The results showed the integrated dispatch presents advantages in relation to classic economic spinning reserves allocation methodologies.
