Abstract
An overview of the environment in the low Earth orbit (LEO) is given, the interaction of this environment with the photovoltaic (PV) power system of the Space Station Freedom is discussed, and environmental programs that are designed to investigate the interaction of the LEO environment with the photovoltaic power system are described. The programs address effects due to atomic oxygen, charged particles and plasma, and micrometeoroids and debris. The programs will support the design of subsystems of the PV module that can survive for the design lifetime in the natural and induced LEO environment
