Abstract
Adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ) are two of the most important techniques for high performance wireless communications. In this paper, we develop a novel cross-layer design of joint AMC/ARQ transmission for TDMA systems. We also carry out an accurate performance analysis of the proposed systems for different traffic types based on Markov chain theory. Our design and analysis differs from previous works by considering different ARQ strategies and the size limitation of transmitter buffer. Selected numerical results show that the proposed AMC/ARQ system can offer considerable performance improvement over traditional systems even with a limited buffer size
