Abstract
This work shows how the basic structure of a quality improvement program (QIP) can delineate an optimization of preventive maintenance programs where large and complex plants and/or systems are an integral part of the ultimate product (or its development and manufacture). Total quality management (TQM) is discussed. An example demonstrates its application at a utility. The role of preventive maintenance in availability is also examined
