Abstract
The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a doubly-periodic magnetodielectric layer bounded by two uniform infinite media is solved by a new method based on the rigorous volume integro-differential equations of electromagnetics. The Galerkin method is applied to reduce these equations to a set of second-order differential ones with constant coefficients in field functionals which contain information about the geometry of the scattering structure. A special scheme of equation set solving is introduced in the case of thick layers to overcome the usual numerical difficulties associated with the undesired exponential functions in the expressions. This method unifies the treatment of both TE- and TM-waves by replacing /spl epsi/ by /spl mu/, /spl mu/ by /spl epsi/, E-components by H-components, and H-components by E-components.
