Abstract
Variable attenuators with a minimum amount of phase shift are necessary to minimize instrumentation and measurement errors. A PIN diode microstrip attenuator is described which produces a 0.14 degrees /dB phase shift at a 14-dB attenuation at 9 GHz. This design utilizes a series of sectionalized ABCD matrices. The theoretical and measured performances of a PIN diode attenuators based on this design closely agreed. It was found that the intercomponent distance on the microstrip is a parameter whose sensitive adjustment minimizes the overall phase shift of the attenuator.<>
