Abstract
Detecting small breast tumors is a challenging task. Early diagnosis leads to more effective treatment. Molecular Breast Imaging with radio-nuclides has a central role to play. Several dedicated gamma-cameras have been built, tested and shown to increase the detection sensitivity for sub-cm size lesions. A new layout has been recently implemented, a dual detector setup that allows spot compression and improves significantly the performance of the system. The layout allows performing spot compression and therefore bringing the detector closer to the lesion with significant increase in the efficiency and consequently the SNR. The layout allows performing spot compression and therefore bringing the detector closer to the lesion with significant increase in the efficiency and consequently the SNR. The single head parallel hole detector has been successfully used for 10 clinical trials at the University of Tor Vergata (Rome) where a commercial high resolution detector was available, the LUMAGEM by Gamma Medica. All trials showed comparable results with respect to the LUMAGEM system.
