  • Abstract
    As authorized in the Swift Rail Development Act of 1994, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) may undertake activities for the improvement, adaptation, and integration of proven technologies for commercial application in high-speed passenger rail service in the US. Since the sole operator of intercity passenger rail service in the country, Amtrak, has initiated a program to complete the electrification of the Northeast Corridor and to replace the Metroliner with new electrified high-speed equipment, FRA plans to concentrate its research program to identify and adapt technologies that could improve the next generation rail service for nonelectrified corridors. Several areas of key technologies such as train control, nonelectric propulsion, materials, and grade crossing are identified as the critical technologies that need to be further developed for safe and improved high-speed rail service on existing lines
