Abstract
An algorithm for tool orientation vectors compression is proposed in this paper with the aim of shortening size of machining codes and maintaining small feedrate fluctuations in five-axis CNC machining. In this algorithm, tool orientation vectors are firstly segmented according to the inflection of the curve composed of their tips. Secondly, vectors in the same segment are represented by establishing a local rotating coordinate system with the aim of the start and the end tool orientation vectors of the segment. A method of parameterization considering the characteristics of tool orientation vectors and the least square method are then applied to fit each segment of vectors into a curve. Boundary conditions have also been adopted to maintain the accuracy and smoothness between the curves. Format of NC codes suitable for this algorithm is then introduced. Finally, simulated examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm.
