Abstract
The collector circuits of large windfarms contain hundreds of circuit miles of underground cable and equipment. Voltage transients which enter the underground system propagate as traveling waves which can double in magnitude when they reach an open point. Deadfront arresters are applied at the ends of collector circuit feeders to limit transient overvoltages to an acceptable level. This paper provides a description of the design, application, and testing of an elbow arrester for collector circuit application.
