Abstract
Summary form only given. Sphinx machine is a long implosion time Z-pinch driver used in Centre d´Etudes de Gramat. It currently implodes nested wire arrays in ~800 ns with ~4 MA current. This paper discusses the first experiments done on this machine to drive a hohlraum. It exploits the axial radiation produced by the Z-pinch to heat up a 5 mm in diameter, 7 mm in height gold coated hohlraum. In this configuration, Sphinx is a ~100 GW radiation source with a 25 ns rise time. Therefore rough estimates show that a ~30 eV hohlraum temperature is feasible. To measure the radiation temperature, two diagnostics are used: direct measurement of radiation power emitted by the gold wall through a 2 mm radial aperture and active, laser probe shock measurement technique on the axial end opposite to the radiation entrance hole. Simulations are also presented which justify the temperature inference from the shock breakout time and the model of radiation transmission through the radial hole
