Abstract
Radio and automobiles have been a standard pairing for some 50 years. With electric vehicles (EVs) connected to the power grid now available, FM Radio Data System (RDS) technology can provide value as a low-cost global solution for EV smart-grid connectivity with various digital real-time data transmissions, such as command-control, information, and advisories. This paper reviews the cooperative work between General Motors and e-Radio Inc. to investigate various concepts with respect to the capability of FM RDS to support such industry standards as SAE J2847/1 and SEP 1.0. This development work has resulted in a fully functional prototype.
