  • Abstract
    The knowledge-based route planning (KBRP) study focuses on the military scenario of a tactical aircraft on a low-altitude, terrain-following/terrain-avoidance mission. The goal of KBRP is to develop a prototype computer system which automatically plans a proposed route for such a mission and interactively explains the reasoning underlying its plan. The approach may be viewed as a three-phase system in which the use of symbolic processing in a high-level first phase reduces the required state space searching in the following low-level phase. Phases three is an interactive explanation facility. All three phases are guided by heuristic rules developed with the guidance of an experienced tactical aircraft pilot instructor
