  • Abstract
We propose a novel generic approach to laser cooling based on non-resonant interactions with optical standing waves experiencing random sudden phase jumps. The technique, termed "optical shaking", is applicable to the cooling of atoms and molecules to high phase space densities and without the loss of particles typical of evaporative cooling.
