Abstract
Out of the three operational areas (generation, transmission and distribution) of electrical utility, the distribution system needs more attention and is difficult to standardize due to its complexity. The transmission and distribution loss in India has been in the range of 25-30 percent, in which major share is contributed at the distribution level. This is due to inadequate investments for the system improvement works. This paper presents an efficient optimization method for the optimal capacitor sizing of the radial distribution network in order to reduce the power losses and to improve the voltage profile. The capacitor location is determined by the known sensitivity analysis method. The proposed method is tested on 33-bus and 69-bus system and encouraging results are obtained.
