Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. An 8.5-GHz backward-wave oscillator (BWO) experiment has been designed and performed. Measurements of beam parameters including energy, current, and rotation were performed. Issues concerning microwave pulse shortening were investigated. The design values are V beam=1 MV, a beam current of 1-7 kA, and a pulse length of ≈60 ns. An annular beam is generated with possible radii 7, 8, and 9 mm. The beam is generated in, and is guided by, a strong, variable magnetic field of 0.6-3.0 T. Beam diagnostics include Rogowski coils, Faraday cup/CVRs, and witness plates. Microwaves are generated through interaction with a rippled-wall cylindrical waveguide. Microwave diagnostics include a microwave spectrometer, a dispersive delay line, and an LCD witness plate to view the mode pattern of the generated power
