Abstract
MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 have been successful standards, and it is expected that MPEG-4 will also set new frontiers in terms of audiovisual representation. Following these projects, MPEG has decided to address the problem of quickly and efficiently identifying various types of multimedia material of interest to the user. For this, a standardized way of describing audiovisual information will be developed in MPEG-7. Since MPEG is a very open environment evolving based on the validity of technical arguments and relevance of application requirements, it is needed, desirable and expected that many experts with useful knowledge in the field of audiovisual description will join this challenging effort
