Abstract
The author discusses the applications and implementation of RF-based data communications networks with particular reference to the field of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and the SIMON communications system. SIMON implements the lower four layers of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model. The network offers a dynamic or static routing capability depending on the configuration and its ideal for command and control, telemetry. SCADA applications, and low data rate computer communications. In order to accommodate a variety of applications SIMON has been made as flexible as possible. The design decisions and system features are discussed with respect to each layer of the OSI model
