Abstract
Low voltage distribution network design involves the selection of conductor size and route subject to constraints. These requirements are that the customer receive reliable electrical power within a contracted voltage and demand current range. A further design criterion is that the overall network capital and running costs should be minimal for the particular specifications. This involves a knowledge of the forecasted customer loads as well as a voltage drop calculation algorithm that will give accurate results. In practice, this information is usually obtained from published design guidelines. The formulation and periodic revision of such guidelines pertinent to a developing country, such as South Africa, are considered
