  • Abstract
It is shown that continuity, implicitly encoded by synchronization, can be explicitly represented by special neurons. The concept is a hierarchical structure of neurons, closely related to a data structure, which has been successfully used in pattern recognition systems by G. Hartmann (1987). This concept can easily be implemented by pulse-coded model neurons, providing temporal labels, but only with difficulty by analog model neurons. A description is given of the synchronization mechanism and of its two-dimensional implementation. The concept of explicit representation of continuity is explained
