Abstract
A challenge in diffraction has been the characterization of coated wedges and edges, often modeled via the standard impedance boundary conditions (SIBCs) and generalized impedance boundary conditions (GIBCs). This presentation traces the development of these boundary conditions and their applications to diffraction theory. Uniform expressions and multiple diffraction studies are reviewed, including the application of incremental length diffraction coefficients (ILDCs) highlighting specific contributions of Professor Tiberio in this area. Heuristic expressions for the diffraction by edges and wedges with thick coatings are then presented using a generalization based on a formulation evoked by Prof. Tiberio. Comparative data are also given to assess the validity of these heuristic expressions
