Abstract
In this paper, we propose a variation of the early packet discard scheme, EPD+, to control the number of packets from the same VC that are discarded successively. The scheme allows for the effect of successive packet loss on TCP´s congestion window. Moreover, the scheme can utilize the buffer that may remain unused in the EPD scheme. Simulation results for the EPD+ scheme show an obvious improvement on effective throughput. TCP segment size and buffer utilization ratio are important factors to determine the efficiency of the scheme. Because the scheme retains the packet-based discarding policy, the scheme can still support other transport layer protocols well
