  • Abstract
Current threats from piracy and terrorism have fuelled advances in non-lethal response technology and tactics. However, official security instructions to be followed in the event of unauthorized boarding have not yet embraced these technological advances. The current advice includes the use of fire hoses and sirens as improvised non-lethal response measures. More suitable, dedicated non-lethal response technology is available to replace these improvised devices. The technologies have been designed specifically for use as non-lethal warning and response measures. Since the technologies are closely related to those already suggested for improvised employment, their integration within existing security advice is more easily managed. This study details the technology and tactics to be integrated within existing security instructions.
