Abstract
The replacement of mechanical transmission by synchronised variable speed drives is becoming an increasing trend for process control machinery. The introduction of this technology will require the application of new techniques which are currently being developed. The key to the new emerging design techniques is the selection of drives, and the prediction of, and improvement in, performance by use of simulation. It is shown how to compare drives and guide-lines have been presented to their selection. A case study has shown how it has been possible to more than double the performance of a system by use of simulation as a design tool
